²⁶ And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, ²⁷ “How long shall ^(A)this wicked congregation grumble against me? ^(B)I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. ²⁸ Say to them, ^(C)‘As I live, declares the Lord, ^(D)what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: ^29 (E)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and ^(F)of all your number, listed in the census ^(G)from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, ³⁰ not one shall come into the land where I ^(H)swore that I would make you dwell, ^(I)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. ^31 (J)But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that ^(K)you have rejected. ³² But as for you, ^(L)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. ³³ And your children ^(M)shall be shepherds in the wilderness ^(N)forty years and shall ^(O)suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. ^34 (P)According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, ^(Q)forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ ^35 (R)I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all ^(S)this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”

^36 (T)And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— ³⁷ the men who brought up a bad report of the land—^(U)died by plague before the Lord. ³⁸ Of those men who went to spy out the land, ^(V)only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.

Israel Defeated in Battle

³⁹ When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people ^(W)mourned greatly. ⁴⁰ And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, ^(X)“Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.” ^41 (Y)But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the Lord, when that will not succeed? ^42 (Z)Do not go up, ^(AA)for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. ⁴³ For there ^(AB)the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.” ^44 (AC)But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither ^(AD)the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp. ⁴⁵ Then ^(AE)the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to ^(AF)Hormah.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

15 David^[a] built houses for himself in the city of David. And he prepared a place for the ark of God and ^(A)pitched a tent for it. ² Then David said that no one but the Levites may carry ^(B)the ark of God, for the Lord had chosen them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister to him forever. ^3 (C)And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord ^(D)to its place, which he had prepared for it. ⁴ And David gathered together the sons of Aaron and ^(E)the Levites: ⁵ of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, with 120 of his brothers; ⁶ of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, with 220 of his brothers; ⁷ of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, with 130 of his brothers; ⁸ of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, with 200 of his brothers; ⁹ of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, with 80 of his brothers; ¹⁰ of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, with 112 of his brothers. ¹¹ Then David summoned the priests ^(F)Zadok and ^(G)Abiathar, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab, ¹² and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites. ^(H)Consecrate yourselves, you and your brothers, so that you may bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, ^(I)to the place that I have prepared for it. ^13 (J)Because you did not carry it the first time, the Lord our God broke out against us, because we did not seek him according to the rule.” ¹⁴ So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. ¹⁵ And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders ^(K)with the poles, ^(L)as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord.

¹⁶ David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on ^(M)musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy. ¹⁷ So the Levites appointed ^(N)Heman the son of Joel; and of his brothers ^(O)Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari, their brothers, ^(P)Ethan the son of Kushaiah; ¹⁸ and with them their brothers of the second order, Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel. ¹⁹ The singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were to sound bronze cymbals; ²⁰ Zechariah, ^(Q)Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to ^(R)Alamoth; ²¹ but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, ^(S)Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to ^(T)the Sheminith. ²² Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, should direct the music, for he understood it. ²³ Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark. ²⁴ Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, should ^(U)blow the trumpets before the ark of God. ^(V)Obed-edom and Jehiah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.

^25 (W)So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of ^(X)Obed-edom with rejoicing. ²⁶ And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed ^(Y)seven bulls and seven rams. ²⁷ David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as also were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the music of the singers. And David wore a linen ephod. ²⁸ So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, to the sound of the horn, ^(Z)trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on ^(AA)harps and lyres.

²⁹ And as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and celebrating, and she despised him in her heart.

The Vestibule of the Temple

⁴⁸ Then he brought me to ^(A)the vestibule of the temple and measured the ^(B)jambs of the vestibule, five cubits on either side. And the breadth of the gate was fourteen cubits, and the sidewalls of the gate^[a] were three cubits on either side. ^49 (C)The length of the vestibule was twenty cubits, and the breadth twelve^[b] cubits, and people would go up to it by ten steps.^[c] And there were pillars beside the jambs, one on either side.

The Inner Temple

41 Then he brought me to ^(D)the nave and measured the ^(E)jambs. On each side six cubits^[d] was the breadth of the jambs.^{[e] 2} And the breadth of the entrance was ten cubits, and the sidewalls of the entrance were five cubits on either side. And he measured the length of the nave,^{[f] (F)}forty cubits, and its breadth, ^(G)twenty cubits. ³ Then he went ^(H)into the inner room and measured the jambs of the entrance, two cubits; and the entrance, six cubits; and the sidewalls on either side^[g] of the entrance, seven cubits. ⁴ And he measured ^(I)the length of the room, twenty cubits, and its breadth, twenty cubits, across ^(J)the nave. And he said to me, “This is ^(K)the Most Holy Place.”

⁵ Then he measured the wall of the temple, six cubits thick, and the breadth of ^(L)the side chambers, four cubits, ^(M)all around the temple. ⁶ And the side chambers were in three stories, one over another, ^(N)thirty in each story. There were offsets^[h] all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side chambers, ^(O)so that they should not be supported by the wall of the temple. ⁷ And it became broader as it wound upward to the side chambers, because the temple was enclosed upward all around the temple. Thus the temple had a broad area upward, and ^(P)so one went up from the lowest story to the top story through the middle story. ⁸ I saw also that the temple had a raised platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers measured a full reed of ^(Q)six long cubits. ⁹ The thickness of the outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits. ^(R)The free space between the side chambers of the temple and the ^10 (S)other chambers was a breadth of ^(T)twenty cubits all around the temple on every side. ¹¹ And the doors of the ^(U)side chambers opened on ^(V)the free space, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south. And the breadth of the free space was five cubits all around.

¹² The building that was facing ^(W)the separate yard on the west side was seventy cubits broad, and the wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length ninety cubits.

² I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to ^(A)agree in the Lord. ³ Yes, I ask you also, true companion,^[a] help these women, who have labored^[b] side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, ^(B)whose names are in the book of life.

^4 (C)Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. ⁵ Let your reasonableness^[c] be known to everyone. ^(D)The Lord is at hand; ^6 (E)do not be anxious about anything, ^(F)but in everything by prayer and supplication ^(G)with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. ⁷ And ^(H)the peace of God, ^(I)which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

⁸ Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. ⁹ What you have learned^[d] and ^(J)received and heard and seen ^(K)in me—practice these things, and ^(L)the God of peace will be with you.
